Abstract

The goal of this cruise is to characterize the distribution and fate of oiled sediment at sites on the continental shelf and slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico. The cruise has been divided into two legs based on the regional distribution of sampling sites. Leg 1 (August 15-22), departs and returns to Panama City and includes sampling sites to the east and northeast of the Deepwater Horizon blowout in and around the area of the DeSoto Canyon. Leg 2 (August 22-30) departs from Panama City and returns to St. Petersburg and includes sampling sites to the southwest and northwest of the DwH wellhead. These sites were chosen with reference to previous sampling, bathymetry, and fine-scale geomorphological features. Sampling activity including sediment coring and water column hydrography.
