Abstract

The goal of this cruise was to characterize the distribution and fate of oiled sediment at sites on the continental shelf and slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico. The cruise has been divided into two legs based on the regional distribution of sampling sites. Leg 1 (August 14-21), departed and returned to Panama City and included sampling sites to the east and northeast of the Deepwater Horizon blowout in and around the area of the DeSoto Canyon. Leg 2 (August 21-29) departed from Panama City and returned to St. Petersburg and included sampling sites to the southwest and northwest of the DwH wellhead. These sites were chosen with reference to previous sampling, bathymetry, and fine-scale geomorphological features.
